Random Access Memory (RAM) is the component of the computer that is performing most tasks. It gets the instructions on what to do from the CPU and carries out the actions. RAM is one of the most important parts to consider when buying a new computer, as the RAM plays a large part in making your computer run fast and smooth. The two key factors in purchasing RAM is the GBs of RAM and the generation of DDR it is.
First, the amount of GBs of RAM you will need can vary greatly based on needs, use, and price. For your computer to run smoothly, you should consider at least 8GB of RAM the minimum. On a budget, 4GB of RAM will work, but expect significantly slower speeds when it comes to opening files or running applications. Generally, the more RAM the better, but too much RAM will cost unnecessary money spent on RAM not being fully utilized. As mentioned previously, 8GB RAM is good for general use. For doing more intensive computer tasks such as work, video editing, rendering, or gaming, 16GB or more will be highly beneficial. For most people, going higher than 64GB (and even 32GB) RAM should be more than enough.
The generation of the RAM is also something to keep in mind. The most recent generation of RAM is DDR5. Each generation, RAM gets more efficient and faster, but also costs much more. Beware if a new computer has DDR3 or lower RAM, as that is very outdated by today's standards. For most, DDR4 balances utility with price. DDR5 is the best, but also may cost significantly more due to the high demand of DDR5 for AI development.
