| A Message from the Director | ||
| Welcome to the Jankola Library and Slovak Museum. The Jankola Library was named after Rev. Matthew Jankola, founder of the sisters of SS. Cyril and Methodius. It was begun in 1968 by Sister Martina Tybor at the request of Slovak priests, sisters and immigrants to preserve their ethnic heritage. When the Slovaks realized they were about to loose precious national treasures due to the political climate of the time they came to America and researched Slovak libraries, churches and schools - places where they could deposit these treasures for safe keeping. |  |

The leaders of those various places where the materials were deposited realized that small collections were impractical and sought to find a central place where all materials could be stored. At that time the sisters of SS. Cyril and Methodius had the largest depository and were chosen to house the collection. Jankola Library and Museum has the largest treasure-hold of Slovakiana on this continent. If you cannot visit Slovakia or are planning to travel to Slovakia we invite you to visit the Library in Danville. Here you will learn about the culture and heritage of the Slovak people. Their deep faith is evidenced by the fact that they won their independence Jan 1 1993. |

Jankola Library is grateful to contributors such as the First Catholic Slovak Men’s Association of the USA and Canada, The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, the Sokols and the many benefactors who have seen to it that the materials are maintained and the holdings expanded every year. Many people of Slovak heritage have generously given artifacts, music, paintings, books, bibles and so much more to build the library to the resource that it is today. |
