SummerSERVE,
the most extensive volunteer opportunity available to King's students through
OVS. SummerSERVE is a variable length project requiring two to eight weeks of volunteer
time during the summer.
During
SummerSERVE, each student is asked to commit many hours during their summer
vacation to become an active member of a
new community through service. These hours can be distributed at the students leisure at the
site of their choice. Volunteers must pay for transportation to
their site. Food and housing are provided at no additional cost. In the
past few years, students worked in Phoenix, AZ, Baltimore, MD, Spokane, WA,
Portland, OR, Plymouth, PA, and Jonestown, MI. At these sites projects included soup kitchen work, clothing distribution, job search skills, teaching,
and counseling. |

"I
learned more about myself during this experience than any other
SERVE trip I’ve participated on. My SummerSERVE trip to Andre
House was my third trip there, but my
first traveling alone.
I was very much so out of my comfort zone and was to say
the least a minority as a 21-year old white female who spoke
almost exclusively English." - Christie Yarosavich,
SummerSERVE volunteer at Andre House, Phoenix, AZ |
